Come back Roy
Friday | June 10, 2005 | 5:13 pm
Dead.
Apparently this has been happening to others, as the part I need is back ordered until June 16.
The power supply used to be user servicable but that is no longer true, so I have to wait for the part, and wait for a tech to make the repair.
Thankfully Roy is less than a year old, so we’re getting the at-home repair service, which is sweet. But I’d rather not need any repairs — at home or otherwise.
Since you can no longer see anything on poor Macsimus, our very old G3 iBook, due to either the inverter or the backlight, Erica and I are Mac-less.
I’ve tried working in Cygwin on my PC, but it’s not the same as productive and fun.
I’ve tried working on my Debian server, but since its headless I have to do it through my PC anyway.
I’m taking this way too hard…

Climbing out from under it
Saturday | January 8, 2005 | 2:45 pm
I’m still trying to climb out from underneath:
- Horrible flu — that had me out of work for a few days after I got back from a quick trip home.
- Tons o’ work — that piled up during the aforementioned bout with family and flu.
- Pile o’ reading — I had several thousand unread blog entries in my aggregator o’ choice. I’ll never get through them all, but I can die trying…
Pile o’ entertainment — We got a Tivo for Christmas and I’m quickly feeling that “TV on my schedule” zen-like feeling that all my Tivoed friends spoke about.
Prior to owning one, I’d swear that Tivo was actually a cult, the way folks would talk about its life-changing aspects.
The new addition to our family also means having to learn to cope with yet another queue in my life. (E-mail x 2, Netflix, Bloglines, todos x 2 being the others.)
On top of the Tivo, we also got Carinvale and Homicide on DVD, that’s a lot of TV to watch… and I must try not to let the distinction blur between the two and wonder whether Management is reassigning Crosetti’s cases fairly. After all Ben, had a 100 percent closure rate. Drats, I did again!
All of this is to say, I’m alive (barely after that flu), and I do intend to finish my blogging to-do.
No, really, I promise. Look, I even have drafts a-going….

Time for a turnaround
Wednesday | December 1, 2004 | 8:59 am
I know, I know, I haven’t blogged much.
And by much, I mean at all.
But that’s all going to change, soon. Here’s what needs to get done:
Decorate for ChristmasUpgrade to MT 3.1Integrate a better Linkblog/Blogmarks/Blinks with del.icio.us— I don’t like the default way it ships links off to your blog, I’m working on something more like Kottke’s remaindered links.Fix bugs in del.icio.us linkblog integration (continually posting the same entries)Migrate links from old posts, that I actually intended to post, to new linkblog- Make future-proof, cruft-free URLs — I think I’m going to go with a slug for all future entries, and I’m also not fond of /archives … maybe /entries or /view…
- Move my non-blog pages to a seperate blog in MT.
Create a drafts blog— in keeping with the openness and spirit of blogging, I thought it’d be cool to have a drafts blog (and accompanying RSS feed) so you could see what’s in the hopper. Might not be worth reading, but I think it’ll put the pressure on me to, you know, actually write something more than once a year.- Start, you know, actually writing something in this space.
- Redesign — fixed, liquid, em-based, where she stops nobody knows!
- Add a “What am I up to” section — cool name pending, suggestions welcome.

Site improvements
Saturday | December 13, 2003 | 3:40 pm
As you can see, heisel.org, has taken on a slight new look. I’ve switched to a sans-serif typeface for everything but blockquotes, and I’ve adjusted some of the color scheme here and there.
I also moved the historic photo of the Spirit of St. Louis the absolute bottom of the page. I liked having if fixed at the bottom of the viewport but too many browser just don’t play nice with fixed backrounds (CPU and memory usage spikes…).
But fear not, my dear readers, the original stylesheet still exists. If you’re using a real browser, then you should be able to switch the stylesheet to “Classic” to see the old appearance.
I’ve also added a conctact page, and a colophon, for those interested in contacting me and fonts respectively.
Finally, I’ve turned the Trackback capability of Moveable Type on, and using Simple Comments, they now appear, rightfully, among the user-submitted comments.
P.S. For those of you who miss the plane being in view, I may add an historic image to my flag… stay tuned.

On hirings and movings
Friday | August 29, 2003 | 9:56 am
Einstein was right, time is relative…
It’s been a little more than three weeks since I was given a job offer to work for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in that time I’ve:
- Accepted the job offer
- Set up to move to Atlanta
- Defended my thesis
- Moved to Atlanta to a temporary apartment
- Looked for an apartment
- Found an apartment
- Moved the stuff the movers had into the apartment
- Moved some of the stuff our parents had into the apartment
- I’ve been working at the AJC since the 18th
So while my life has been moving at near relativistic speeds, to an outside observer, nearly three weeks has passed, but for me, it’s seemed like maybe a few days.
I’m currently on a dial-up account until my broadband is installed, so please pardon the delay between posts until then.
But expect a post in the near future looking at news sites’ performances on dial-up…

Yes, I’m still alive
Saturday | June 14, 2003 | 6:04 pm
Though you might not think so, given the dearth of posts.
However, I’ve revamped the design of my print and Web portfolio pages.
It’s still CSS, but now the text does not wrap underneath the thumbnails, the thumbnails have increased in size, and I’ve added more clips to both sections. I also created a neat-o-keen PHP script that creates a page on the fly for all of my print clips. I never liked linking directly to images, but didn’t want to have an XHTML page for each clip.
Did I mention I’m looking for a job?
I’m going to be updating my resume soon and I’ll try to keep a running log of how the job hunt goes, for those that are interested.
And I promise to start commenting on Web design, journalism, etc. soon.
I’m currently working on my thesis and teaching J310, advanced editing and design, at MU, and between those two tasks and the run-up to my job hunt, I’ve been a bit busy.

Site updates
Sunday | May 11, 2003 | 8:40 pm
I recently added my Sept. 11, 2002 special section to the print design section of my Web site.
I apologize of the paucity of entries lately. It’s finals week here at MU and I’m also trying to get the ball rolling on my thesis, I’ve gotten almost all the texts for my content analysis and sent out the first batch of letters asking circulation managers for some data.
Look for some of my more current design work to be posted soon as I begin to gear up for the great job hunt — I finish my thesis in August if anyone’s interested in a copy editor or designer (print and Web).
