In 1970, black civic and religious leaders founded
Indiana Black Expo Inc. The inaugural event, an exposition
showcasing black achievements in culture, art, history and
economics, was held the following summer at the Indiana State
Fairgrounds as an official event of the Indianapolis
Sesquicentennial celebration. By its 30th anniversary in 2000, Black
Expo had 12 chapters throughout the state and hosted not only a
Summer Celebration but events like the Circle City Classic football
game in October.
